Q: My operator
seems to hesitate before it runs. I can hear the contactor or relays
chattering, and I have to hold the button in a few moments before it
moves. What's going on?
A: Usually
whenever the contactor or relays are chattering and the door hesitates the
wiring to the pushbutton is not adequate or the contactor or relays are
receiving insufficient power. Mainly the problem occurs with drawbar
operators because of the inverted mounting position and the effects of
gravity.
The operator manual and
wiring diagrams call for minimum 14 gage wire, 12 gage over 100 feet of
run. If the wiring is not sufficient the light gage wire causes a
significant loss of current over a long run and causes erratic operation of
the contactor and relays. Changing to a heavier gage wire should take
care of that problem.
Secondly, the operators
are rated at 120 volts. If the power coming into the operator is
significantly under that the resulting control circuit power from the
transformer, nominally 24 volts, may not be sufficient to activate and
control the contactor and relays. Testing and ensuring proper incoming
power should help alleviate this problem.
Q: I have an old
S33 commercial operator and am wondering if and how I can hook up safety beams
to it.
A: First you need
to check whether the operator has two or three limit switches. If it
only has two then it was not originally wired to accept safety edges.
You may be able to get an after market device such as the Safety Reverse
Converter from Domino that will allow you to hook up photo eyes.
If you do have three
limits then you should be able to hook up a normally open switch from photo
eyes or a safety edge to terminals 9 and 10 on the main terminal board.
You can check this function by starting the door downward, then momentarily
shorting across terminals 9 and 10 with a short jumper wire. The door
should reverse and go back fully open.
Q: How do I hook
up a radio receiver to an S or U series operator?
A: For the S
series you hook up common (#1) on the receiver to #3 on the terminal board in
the operator, the radio relay/N.O. (#2) on the receiver to #8 on the terminal
board in the operator, and 24V (#3) on the receiver directly to one leg (24V
side) of the transformer.
For the U series you
hook up common (#1) on the receiver to #3 on the terminal board in the
operator, the radio relay/N.O. (#2) on the receiver to #8 on the terminal
board in the operator, and 24V (#3) on the receiver to #2 on the terminal
board in the operator.
Q:
Are troubleshooting guides available for the occasions I run into more than one
problem?
A: Yes. We
have both a Commercial
Troubleshooting Guide as well as a Commercial
Safety Guide available. Click on either of those two items and you
will be taken to a .pdf file that is available for you to read or download.
